The Tradewind 35 is a sailboat designed by the maritime architect John Rock in the mid seventies. Less than 100 boats have been produced. The Tradewind 35 is built by the Dutch yard Tradewind Yachts B.V..

Hull

The hull is made of hand laid fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of hand laid fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The deck is a sandwich construction which improves the indoor climate. Especially when the water is colder than the air in the cabin, then the double hull insulates against cold water and reduce the condense water in the cabin. The core material in the sandwich construction is balsa.

The interior is like many other boats made of mahogany. Mahogany belongs to the hardwood species, known for being water-repellent and resistant to decay. It has an attractive wood grain and holds wood polish and varnish well.
The boat is equipped with a galley, 270.0 liter fresh water capacity and toilet facility.


Rig

The Tradewind 35 is built with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

Full keel

The Tradewind 35 is built with a long keel. A long keel provide a better directional stability than a similar boat with a fin keel; on the other hand, better directional stability means also that the boat is more difficult to handle in a harbour with less space.

The keel is made of lead. Compared with iron, lead has the advantage of being 44% heavier, which allows a smaller keel and hence less water resistance and higher speed.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.68 - 1.78 meter (5.51 - 5.81 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.


Engine

The fuel tank has a capacity of 155.0 liters (40 US gallons, 34 imperial gallons).

The Tradewind 35 has been equipped with different engine alternatives.

Alternative 1:

Tradewind 35 may be equipped with an inboard Yanmar 3GM30F diesel engine at 27 hp (20 kW). Calculated max speed is about 4.5 knots

Alternative 2:

The boat may be equipped with an inboard Nanni diesel engine at 42 hp (31 kW). Calculated max speed is about 5.6 knots

The transmission is a shaft drive. A shaft drive will in the long run require less maintenance than other types of drive e.g. a sail drive.

Otherwise the balsa wood will eventually rotten and be expensive/impossible to repair.
